Students that have not mastered paragraph writing use the Paragraph of the Week.

Students that are ready for multiple paragraphs use the Writing of the Week packet. They will write 3 or more paragraphs with an introduction and closing section.

We use the same prompts each week even though the expectations are different. This makes it very easy to manage.

This structured, consistent approach allows students to focus on their writing skills and not the directions. Each week has the same format with a new topic. It is a 4-day format so you can send it as weekly homework or keep it in the classroom. It is successfully used both ways at our school.

Paragraph of the Week schedule

✏Day 1 is gathering their thoughts and ideas. Then, they select the 3 favorite reasons to include in the paragraph.

✏Day 2 includes developing the reasons into sentences. They also add a supporting detail (or 2) for each important idea sentence.

✏Day 3 is for writing the introduction and conclusion sentences. Students also reread the day 2 sentences to revise for word choice and grammar.

✏Day 4 allows the student to write the final draft and check for convention errors.

Writing of the Week schedule

✏Day 1 is gathering thoughts and ideas, then writing the introduction and first paragraph.

✏Day 2 has the students writing the second and third paragraphs.

✏Day 3 includes writing the conclusion. Students also reread the paragraphs to revise for organization and word choice.

✏Day 4 allows the student to write/type the final draft and check for convention errors.

All topics are personal so your students are automatic experts on the content. There is no research to be done to complete these paragraphs. All the content comes from their personal experiences and thoughts.
